Uniforms and vehicles from World War II will illustrate the past for local residents Saturday at the Torch of Freedom event in Beckwourth Riverfront Park in Marysville.

But hearing the veterans who took part in the action will bring the era to life.

The Torch of Freedom 2007, honoring World War II veterans, is scheduled from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. in the park’s Mervyn’s Pavilion and Lions Grove.

The public is invited to attend opening ceremonies, said Stephanie Ruscigno, commander of the Disabled American Veterans Chapter 9, Marysville, the program’s presenter, to honor “Old Glory” and celebrate the veterans.

Muster will be at 10:15 a.m., followed by reveille and the raising of the flag.

Children’s activities, music and the play “Passing the Torch of Freedom” will be included among the activities throughout the day.

In addition, flags will be on display representing every branch of the military plus several flags from various units.

“You’ve seen Ken Burns (documentary on WWII),” Ruscigno said. “Now meet the real heroes who made it happen right in your own community.”

The event’s sponsors include the Appeal-Democrat and AM1600 KUBA.

For more information, contact Stephanie Ruscigno at 315-8990; or Marvin King of the Yuba-Sutter Veterans Service office, 749-4800.
